The current perk selection leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to the overall balance, gameplay impact & types of perks. Outliers are the 2 perks that affect armor which I would consider to be downright overpowered as they make the game way too easy and are much more powerful than anything else on offer.
- Armor Durability
A straight minimum of 20% armor increase that only goes up with every additional stack makes armor a very thick layer of defense that’s nearly never broken unless you get shot A LOT. It’s somewhat fine on its own but when combined with the other armor perk, becomes completely busted as the mercs simply don’t get a chance to damage you in a meaningful way.
I’d suggest changing it from % based modifier to a flat one to tone it down a bit.
- Armor Regen
The real issue, Armor Regen is extremely overpowered so long as the player kills enemies, he’s effectively untouchable, which in a game that mostly revolves around that exact thing is not hard to achieve.
Simply awarding the player with flat 15(+5 per stack) armor for such trivial thing is way too good and requires no skill to be effective. It makes the depletable layer of defense that is armor too effective at its job. This would be fine if health damage couldn’t be easily replenished or there were high consequences for dying but in a game where medkits are abundant, teammates plenty and revives nearly free, it just doesn’t make much sense to make players this durable.
A lot of things could be done to balance this out and I’ll outline what I think should be done to not completely overnerf this mechanic in order to better fit in with the other perks.
1. Change the criteria for when it activates from a simple elimination to a headshot one. That way it rewards skillful play and sharp aim over just mindless slaughter of anything that moves.
2. Put a few second cooldown between activations as getting shot at by multiple enemies should have its consequences rather than going from full to nothing to full again with little regard for self-preservation.
3. Lower the minimum amount that it regens from 15 to 10. That way having just one will not solve the armor statistic for the rest of the game and make additional stacks more meaningful of a choice to make.
Even taking the proposed changes into account, armor regen will still remain a very powerful perk and a must pick for most players. However it will be for a good reason rather than simply godmode-lite with no strings attached.
