Grenade launcher AoE is very unreliable

It seems as if the grenade launcher is very difficult to use, the grenade sometimes seems to deal no damage if it hits a wall instead of the floor, and the damage range feels like it’s higher for players than enemies. It’s easy to blow yourself up and hard to kill enemies with it in any sort of efficient manner. Might be a skill issue, but even if it were more reliable, I currently struggle to see a reason to ever use it.
