Hostage pickup does not force switch off primary when no secondary is equipped

I played a hostage mission where I accidentally unequipped my pistol (oops) and when I picked up the hostage while holding my primary, it did not force me to switch to one of the other slots and I could continue using my primary as normal until I manually switched away, at which point I couldn’t switch back.
